I was thinking about the contests we've done (and not done) over the last year or so, and I wanted to start something like that up again, but I understand that with the YYG competitions almost always going on, plus various other obligations, people don't always have the time to put together an entire game. So on that line of thought, I came around to a cool idea which I wanted to run by the community, see if there is interest, and if so, move forward with it!

Here's the premise - I will design an arena of sorts, basically a room in Game Maker with walls and obstacle objects inside. I'll add to this a basic "robot," which will contain a few required default variables, we'll set some rules about how you can operate this object, and then people who want to enter the competition will construct AI routines for the robot to follow. We'll make a tournament tree of all the people who want to enter, and two (or more?) robots will then be placed inside the room (to try to kill the other(s)), I'll record the results, and we'll determine who wins base don how the AI's perform against each other.

No graphics required - I will supply the base room (which you could use to test your AI programming), and the rest will be on you to program a competent competitor. You wouldn't have top program anything but one object, and the fun would come in watching it cope with other people's AI routines.

There will be prizes, of course.

So does this sound like a good competition? Laughing

How much more do I have to add? :D

Yes but, like, what attacks may they have?

Well, I haven't thought out the whole idea yet, since I wanted to see what kind of a response I'd get first, but likely I'll provide some sort of standard bullet you can use, at the very least.

How much more do I have to add? :D

Wow, i would certainly join in. Maybe you would have to add in your own objects (like bullets) but make different ones (like one thats fast, but really weak| one that is slow but strong|one that is in between) and the robot programmers would have to choose a bullet to fire.

This sounds pretty awesome, what would the limitations be?

I'll do it just to mess around with the robot graphics you give us... I bet they'll look pretty!

Okay, just kidding, the contest sounds really fun, I'll enter without as second thought. Though, you might wanna iron out the details on projectiles and objects people add in, and put limitations on attacks (with everyone_else instance_destroy()). But so far sounds like good fun!

When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. True Story.

I'd be in on something this simple Joyful. I never finished an entire game anyway, just bits and pieces of various prototypes. Laughing

Does no one remember the contest I started a long time ago on this site? EXACT same idea. Though I wasn't offering prizes. Though mine was AI for an entire squad, not a single object.

So, yeah, I'm all for it! Laughing

Well I think this idea already looks like it would be popular enough to try! Laughing

I'll get the details hammered out as soon as I can, and get to work on the base game. Cool

How much more do I have to add? :D

I really like the idea. I would probably be in, as long as I end up liking the final rules.

Somehow I wished that I started the small project with serprex, because its all about AI, and it'd be easy to change it. heheh.
